An outdoor water wall brings a calming and soothing effect to your garden or patio. These decorative items can surely add an amazing aesthetic value to your home. And with the plethora of outdoor water walls to choose from nowadays, you will surely find one that will suit your budget and personal style. But then again, with the wide variety of designs and sizes to choose from, finding the perfect one for you can be quite a daunting task. Here are a couple of outdoor wall features you might want to consider

Outdoor Water Wall Features – Traditional Stone Style

The traditional stone outdoor water wall feature comes in different designs, shapes and sizes. The designs range from flowers, cherubim, fairies, and tea pots to the larger statues like buddhas, elves and gargoyles. This devise is powered by a fountain pump which takes the water up to the spout and the water travel backs down to its basin. The pump of this outdoor water wall featured can be solar powered or connected to an electrical source. It would really depend on which one you prefer.

These outdoor water wall features can be hanged in almost any wall in your garden. And they look great on patio or deck sidings. Although the design is commonly known as “traditional stone style,” this is not really made of stone. If it was, it would be too heavy to hang on wooden walls or patio sidings. They are most often made of synthetic materials or fiber glass.

Metallic Outdoor Water Wall Features

A metallic outdoor wall feature provides a more contemporary and classy look compared to the rustic traditional stone design. These fountains are constructed with copper, bronze or stainless steel finishing. More people prefer these kinds of water decors because they last longer than those that are made of faux stone materials. These are heavier than the stone style fountains, though, so might not be able to hang them on patio or deck walls. However, it would be a great addition to you outdoor living area when it is hanged on the outside wall of your house or a concrete wall in your garden. These outdoor water wall fountains require a little bit more maintenance. You have to make sure to clean the metal covering occasionally. Use mild metal cleansers to keep them from rusting.

A water wall depicts a natural waterfall wherein water flows continuously down a flat surface which is made of natural stone, marble, or metal. This can be attached directly against a wall or it can be a standalone device located in the middle of a garden. This outdoor wall feature makes a great focal point that enhances the beauty of a landscape. It provides a soothing and calming effect that will surely be enjoyed by family, friends and guests. If you decide to go for an outdoor water wall, make sure that it is not only seen in your garden but from the indoors of your home as well.

A bubble water wall can turn any room into a kaleidoscope of sites. These kinds of indoor and outdoor water features have recently become a common accent decor in many homes, work areas, spas and healthcare settings.

There are so many kinds of bubble water features available in the market today. A bubbling water feature adds aesthetic value to a home or office space. Moreover, it provides a relaxing, soothing and Zen-like atmosphere to the room. You may have noticed that a lot of home owners almost always feature large water decors such as fountains or man-made waterfalls in their gardens to enhance the beauty of their outdoor living area. But with a bubbling water feature, it is conveniently small and portable enough which could be beneficial for both outdoor and indoor use.

The kind of bubbling water feature you opt for will greatly depend on your budget and personal taste. You will find a lot of bubbling water features that have the rustic or natural appearance, and there are some that comes in a more contemporary design. Among all the bubbling water decors, a bubble water wall features a more contemporary look.

Bubble Water Wall Materials

A bubble water wall is typically made of glass or acrylic. But most prefer to purchase the acrylic kind since it is more durable than glass. It won’t easily break in case of accidents or an earthquake.

A bubble water wall comes in a wide variety of shapes, designs, sizes and prices. You can find one that is just about a foot tall to one that can cover a whole wall that spans the ceiling to floor. The acrylic or glass panel of a bubble water wall holds a reservoir of water. Installed at the bottom of a bubble water wall are multiple jets that are responsible for producing the bubbles. These bubbles flow up the bubble water wall in straight lines and some are designed to flow in curving lines. A bubble water wall is a great stand alone water decor that can be used to be a focal point of a room or establishment. But it can also work well as an addition to an aquarium or fish tank.

Bubble Water Wall Components

A bubble water wall is usually framed on the top and bottom area. Aside from aesthetic purposes, these frames are there to conceal the light accessories that give illumination to the bubbles. The frames are also used to hide the air pumps and multi jets. The frames are most often made of plastic or acrylic. While the frames of the more expensive and top of the line bubble water wall types are made of bronze copper or stainless steel.

One of the greatest advantages you can get from a bubble water wall is that the water is enclosed. This makes it quite ideal for public use. People, especially young children have the tendency of playing with water features with bubbles and this can create such a mess. But there is no reason for this to happen with a bubble water wall. A bubble water wall is pretty easy to maintain,. All you have to do is occasionally wipe the acrylic or glass panel if it gets dirty.

Deciding to build a water wall may initially seem like a daunting task. But it can actually be an easy project as long as you have the right materials and the proper knowledge. An outdoor water wall made of slate, Plexiglas or rocks would be a great addition to your patio or garden. And you’d be surprised at how easy and fast it would be to complete such a project.

First, you have to decide which area in your outdoors to build a water wall. Make sure that the spot you choose provides the best visibility from both your garden and home.

Tools You Will Need to Build a Water Wall

Shovel

Pond Liner

Trowel

Slate, Rocks Or Plexiglas

Recirculating Fountain Pump

Plastic Tubing

River Rock

Mortar

Measuring Tape

These tools needed to build a water wall are readily available in any garden supply or home improvement shop. Make sure you have an idea of the measurements of your water wall so you’ll know the size of the preformed pond to purchase. There are different kinds of recirculating fountain pumps. Be sure to avail of one that has enough power to send water to the pinnacle of your water wall.

Steps to Build a Water Wall

Stacking rocks or slate to build a water wall may require a lot of materials and effort. But I assure you that in the end your hard work and expenses will all be worth it. River rocks, cobble stones or slate will be used to fill your reservoir. You might also want to consider adding some natural flowers and plants like water lilies or maybe even some koi fish. These will add a dash of exotic beauty to your water wall.

Before you start to build a water wall, clean the area meticulously. Get rid of any rocks, grass or debris and make sure the ground is as level as possible. Measure and mark the area of your water wall and excavate the ground where you plan to put the pond liner. Secure the reservoir/pond liner in the hole.

Mix the cement and place a thin layer on the ground where you plan to build a water wall. Then you can begin to stack the first row of slate. Uniformly run the trowel along the surface of the wet cement. Carefully stack each slate on top of the cement and press each slate firmly into the ground. Put another thin layer of cement over the top of the first row of slate and stack your second row. Apply the cement and stack the slates alternately until you have reached your desired water wall height. Before you do anything else, you have to wait for the cement to dry.

The next step you will take to build a water wall is to attach your recirculating pump to the plastic tubing. Now place the pump in the pond liner. Situate the plastic hose in the area of the water wall that is not is not visible in plain view. You can run this up one side of the water wall or camouflage in somewhere in the middle of the wall in between the rocks.

To complete your build a water wall project, add some river rocks and natural plants in and around your reservoir. This will certainly add to the ambiance and the natural beauty of your water wall. Now fill the reservoir with water, plug in the pump and turn it on. Your fountain pump should have a control system which you can adjust as needed.

That, my friend, is exactly how to build a water wall. It really isn’t as difficult as many presume. An outdoor water wall can certainly be the most amazing focal point of any garden. And if you build a water wall yourself, it can bring beauty and satisfaction that will last a lifetime.
